The Photon counter is based on the ten year technology of Marina Photonics photon counting with custom interface for USB output. It was constructed with a Hamamatsu Hybrid PMT using a doubled YAG 532 nm pulsed sub-nanosecond laser at 8 KHz with1 ns range bins. Improved units can be constructed using the new Marina Photonics Photon counters with up to four channels for two wavelength channel two polarization photon counting for a total cost of about $25,000, which is one fifth the cost of competitive lidars.
